Phase 2 Discussion

In a few months I would like to start implementing phase 2 of the website… though I’m not exactly sure what it will be… by then a lot of content will be available… We’ll need to start putting that information to use… people will come to the website and be overwhelmed by all the different things that are available… I’m thinking create a new section of the website that will use the information here to tell stories… but somehow tell stories in a way that will captivate and motivate more of us to do research…

Please discuss in the comments below

  1. Hugh some how we need to be able to direct people by their family lines. Also we might dicuss burning CD’s by family, maybe using PDF files.
Is their some way, that you could let some one search by family name?
    Thanks TR

  2. When you say family name I’m assuming you don’t mean surname… something more like “James Naylor Jones Sr.”… is that correct?

We could start using full name categories (James Naylor Jones Sr.) instead of surname or in addition to… I hesitated doing this because the categories list could get very large.

  3. I added a contributing entry about keywords:

    How to edit Keywords

This is kind of a hack… How about entering the family name(s) associated with each entry in the keyword field making sure to remove any spaces from the name.

For example: James Naylor Jones Sr. would become JamesNaylorJonesSr (note I left off the period on purpose)

You can then search the website for the unique keyword (family name with no spaces) and get have returned a list of entries that match just that keyword.

It would be easy to add links to family names on the homepage.

Is this a good or bad idea?

I’m still thinking about the CD burning…

  4. The JamesNaylorJones family name keyword idea may not be such a good idea… Your going to stumble upon ancestors (probably from different lines) that have the same name. Like Ross Edwin Roper there is both a grandfather and a grandson with this name neither has a Sr. or Jr. title.

Maybe it would be better to have more categories… I’m just worried about having too many…

  5. Hugh I was just tossing out some ideas.I had surname in mind. You are right, how do you keep the surname and or key words from be coming a list that is to large to handle ??
Iam hopeing that by tossing around ideas, that something will work out.

How about this family groups, ie Roper, Jones, etc, with data linked ? ? Take care TR
