Johan Friedrick Arndt & Christiane Marie Meinecke

This history is composed of information gleaned from mircofilms of Danish records, through the Salt Lake Library, by records and pictures supplied by Borge August Emilius Arndt Nielsen; of Aarhus Denmark. He was a son of ingeborg Arndt Nielsen, who was a daughter of Georg Friederik Arndt.

Johan was born 25 December 1829, probably at Altona or Roily, Ryland; Denmark. New information indicates he may have been born in Preusen, Germany. He probably grew up in one of these areas and was a gifted student of music. He played several band instruments, including the violin. He joined the danish army and was in the military band.

The first record we find of him was when he was stationed in Altona, Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark. He married a beautiful young lady by the name of Christiane Marie Meinecke 19 November 1854.1

They must have had a happy life living here, for their first few years of married life in Altona. Their first child Christian Frederik Arndt was born 20 April 1856.2 This child was living in Aarhus in 1870, no further records were found for him. Georg Friederik Arndt was born 20 July 1857 in Altona.2A The next record lists a son born 12 October 1861 named Carl Rudolf Theodor Arndt, also born in Altona.3 No records could be located for any other children born during this time. Carl is listed with a family in later years living in Aarhus.

Georg is the Grandfather of the Hansen children and the father of Holger Hansen.

Transfer Time

A Move and change in military assignment occured during the next few years. A son Marius Arndt was born while they lived in Viborg. Born 6 April 1866. He was a musician like his father and also shows up later in Aarhus with his family.4 He was in the same military band in Aarhus with Johan, his father.

Johan was transferred again to Aarhus where he lived until both he and Christiane died. Another son Valedemar Arndt was born in Aarhus 14 November 1867.5 Hugo Bernhardt Arndt was born 8 June 1869.6 Evidently they were quite religious people, attending the Domsogn Parrish in Aarhus.

The first daughter we find, was born in Aarhus, Denmark 26 June 1872, named Albertine Emilie Arndt.7 No further records were found for her. Borge Nielsen mentioned that he visited her in a nursing home when she was elderly. He mentioned she married a man by the name of Jurgen, and had three sons. Another daughter was born 11 December, 1875, named Anny Arndt.8A 8 A marriage record was found before the birth record. No further records were found.

Mozart Arndt the last of the children was born 30 July 1877 in Aarhus.9 He was confirmed 11 August 1878. All their children were baptized and confirmed at about age 14, in the Lutheran Church of Denmark. Various other films list the children. No other records were found for Mozart. We know he lived, as Borge included a picture of him.

The census of 1890 listed Johan as age 60, Christiane Marie age 55; Hugo Bernhardt age 20, Anny age 15, Marriage records sho her name as Any. Mozart was also listed on this record as age 12.10 This census also lists Carl Rudolf and his wife and three children residing in Aarhus. Evidently fairly close to the parents, Johan and Christiane’s birth place were listed as different than their marriage records. A street address of where they were living was also listed.10A

A sad time came in the life of Johan as Christiane died 25 September 1891 and was buried 2 October 1891, at the age of 57. An address of where they were living was listed.11

The census of 1901 lists Johan as living in Aarhus at a different address. Another check of the copies of microfilms show that he was living with daughter Anny, husband and two children. This record indicates that there may have been thirteen children. He was retired from the military.

George Friederick Arndt died 20 July 1902 and was buried in Malling Denmark 28 July 1902… He was a watchmaker in Malling about 20 miles from Aarhus.16 The records for Georg’s family will be given in a separate record.

Johan passed from this life 22 August 1914 at the age of 84, while living in Aarhus. Hugo Bernhardt proceeded Johan in death by five days, passing away 17 August 1914 at the age of 45. A Death Certificate lists Johan’s death as 22 August 1914, burial 24 August 1914. Certificate 28 August 1914.13 Hugo, was a bookbinder by trade. His family is listed in the records.

Conclusions

Johan was a very talented musician, playing several instruments, giving private lessons, writing music. He evidently wore a beard most of his life. Christiane was a beautiful helpful loving wife, dying in middle age. To his posterity, the hope is that you can be proud of your lineage. It has been fun, with some spiritual experiences, I won’t relate, in searching this line. To Borge and Erik, we owe gratitude for they made it all possible. In the eternities, I hope to be able to meet Johan and Christiane, and their family and have the strong feeling I now have confirmed.

  1. Hi there ,
My name is Michael Eugene Arndt, it seems as though some of the names in your web page have a resemblance to my family name. We are from Cooperstown N.D. my grandfathers name was Fredick Harold Rudolf Arndt. Any information on the family would be appreciated

  2. My email bounced back, so I’ll post it here.

Thanks for contacting us. I’m not sure if we are related or not… But I try to give you a quick synopsis of my family’s Arndt connection.

My Grandfather (Holger Hansen) was born in 1890 in Denmark. His father was George Friedrick Arndt and his mother was Lisette Hansen. Lisette left Denmark and I think came to Mexico and then settled in Utah.

George’s grandfather was Johan Ardnt a gifted musician (this is the web page you found on our website).

Is (FREDERICK HERMAN RUDOLPH ARNDT) your Grandfather?

I look forward to hearing from you.
