Joseph Benson Roper History

We have been unable to find a complete history of Joseph Benson Roper as he died in 1910 before many of his grandchildren were old enough to get interested in gathering histories and before the Saints became genealogy conscious. Another sad but true fact is that all of Joseph Benson’s and Hannah Elizabeth’s papers and belongings were burned in a fire leaving hardly anything to glean a history from. What we have has been extracted form History books, church records, and what a few of his grandchildren can remember.

David L Roper web site

David L Roper has a great web site, I have been there many times, He and I, emailed each other Last year.

Note: I have not seem any records that proved that we related to Noah Roper. I have viewed the miro films, that others use to link us to Noah. If any one have records to prove other wise, I will retract my words. Thank you Terry D Roper

L. David Roper

www.roperld.com genealogy website references our Roper line.

Another Roper family immigrated from Lincoln County England to Utah as Mormons. This family originated from Noah Roper (b 1720 d 1796 both in Lincoln Co. England). The wife of his grandson John William Roper, Susannah Behunin Smith Roper, made the difficult trip to Utah in 1848 with her four children. Her descendants have been prominent in the LDS Church.

Henry (John) Roper Lawrence Utah Cabin

John Henry Roper Cabin Photo

Photo of the cabin that John Henry Roper and Charlotte Elizabeth Mellow Roper owned in Lawrence Ut.  John Henry Roper owned a large amount of land and sold and subdivided the land to form the town of Lawrence. James Leo Roper’s oldest child is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave in the Lawrence Cemetery. This was told to Deloris Ramon and Peggy Harvey by a Great Nephew of Maria D. Wilstead Roper.

Possible Roper child grave Photo

Possibly the grave of James Leo and Maria D. Wilstead Roper’s oldest child. I believe her name was Elizabeth. I am thinking it may even be Charlotte Elizabeth. I am planning to go back to Price Utah to check out other info, especially the circumstances about her death and the death of James Leo Roper. Grandpa talked about his older sister Elizabeth and the old timers of Lawence stated that’s Maria’s baby.

Deloris Ramon

Great News! Deloris Ramon from Evanston, Wyoming contacted me (her first email ever). She is a Great Granddaughter of Charlotte Elizabeth Mellor and John Henry Roper. Her Grandfather James Leo Roper is a brother to my Great Grandfather William Roper. James Leo Roper married Maria Daisy Wilstead. James and Maria had two children, one lived to be an adult, James William Roper, who is Deloris’ father. James was born in Castlegate, Carbon, Utah and passed away 14 October 1999 in Ogden, Utah. James William Roper married Lavina Deloris Shurtleff, a Great Great Granddaugther of Luman A. Shurtleff.

Deloris and her daughter Peggy Harvey have a number of photos and history to contribute to the website in the future including a photo of Charlotte Elizabeth Mellor. Along with a book about Charlotte: “Charlotte Elizabeth : a tale of tenacity, tragedy, triumph” by JoAnn Mellor Felix.
