Profiles From The Past

Faced his challenges

Brigham Young counseled newly-arrived Welsh immigrants to consider helping settle Sanpete Valley in 1849. “If you want to go with Father Morley to the Sandpitch, I feel he is as good a man as old Elijah,” he encouraged. “and if you are disposed to go I should be glad to have you.”

Isaac Morley had long been relied upon when substantial aid was needed. He was one of the early converts in Kirtland, Ohio, and was commanded to sell his farm there and give the proceeds to the Church. Meantime, he provided a home for Joseph Smith for the Prophet’s first winter in Kirtland. Moving with the saints to Missouri, he established the Morley Settlement near Nauvoo, led a company of 1848 pioneers, held many positions or responsibility and contributed both maturity and means to the young Church.
