Integrating Our Weblog With Gedcom Data

I have installed some new software (TNG by Darrin Lythgoe). It’s a PHP Gedcom program. You can now search gedcom files with the fields on the top right. Michele’s data is online as well as Laura Jensen’s. My father is sending me an updated Roper-Jones gedcom, it should be loaded in a few days (I loaded the old data until then). I’m still working on the interface and navigation (the gedcom features should be considered “beta”).

This is neat because we can now integrate photos, histories and other documents on the weblog with gedcom data, without having to move a lot of files around.

I chose TNG over other PHP software for a number of reasons.

  • The ability to combine our existing blogged data with gedcom data, including photos and histories. All without moving lots of files around.
  • Multiple authors can edit, update and correct the data in the same place as the same time.
  • Gedcom and other data is publicly available (without information on living persons). The webpages are also dynamically generated so the information is always up-to-date.
  • Multiple authors on multiple operating systems can edit the data.
  • When we decide to make a hosting change, the website can be hosted by another computer running a different operating system.
  • We don’t have to pay a monthly fee to use the software, unless we want to.
  • It’s fast

I first heard of this software from Genealogy Blog.

This software is now my preferred family history program. I won’t have to wait to share our computer at home that has PAF. As long as I have access to the internet I can work on the data from any computer.

I do already have a feature request though. I would like to have an RSS (XML) file generated for the “What’s New” content.

If anyone wants access to edit the data just let me know.
